I’m sure many of you are familiar with Crick’s theory of the origins of life. For those who don’t, here’s a quick summary. Frances Crick was a geneticist working on the DNA project and one day, whilst tripping on LSD, he figured out the double helix shape of the DNA. Since then, a majority of scientists have believed that it was through a random chance that Adonine, Cytosine, Thyramine and Guananine bonded with simple base sugars in the primordial ‘soup’ (that is the mineral-rich, water-based oceans of prehistoric Earth) that formed the first strand of DNA. And of course DNA has a tendency to self-replicate and code for protein production, so out of pure coincidence, the first cells appeared on Earth. However, if you look at the probability that these chemicals all happened to bond together in the exact arrangement necessary for the double helix DNA strand, you find that it is around 1:10 to the power of 8900000000000, that’s one against a number that is greater than every single atom in the known universe. Suddenly, you see that the random formation of DNA is ludicrous, so Crick proposed another theory. He suggested that the DNA stand is a technology made by someone (Aliens, Gods, whatever). When you look at the DNA double helix, you can see where he was coming from. First of all, DNA is a high-potential, self-adapting system that is able to change and evolve based on the current environmental conditions. Secondly, the DNA is a highly efficient information-storing system capable of coding incomprehensibly large amounts of data in a compact, self-reinforcing, self-replicating strand. Thirdly, the double helix is a crystal structure that emits small amounts of radiation that is on the human visible spectrum, it’s just very weak (so we can’t see it). The long sequences of repetitious ‘junk’ DNA has been theorised to act as transmitter antennae which can pick up the radiation of other DNA strands, acting as inter-organismal signals. This could explain why unicellular organisms will often behave together as one entity. So think about it: a highly stable, self-transforming coding system that is able to adapt to a wide variety of conditions suddenly appears on Earth.
So now that we have the idea behind us, I want to introduce to this Terrence McKenna’s idea of the extra-terrestrial mushroom. As he has noted, mushroom spores are ultra light (which allow them to float free of planetary atmospheres). They can stay dormant for billions of years (which would allow them to travel through the vacuum of space). Their shells are one of the hardest known organis substances known (which would protect them against the heat caused by entering an atmosphere, which wouldn’t be that high because of their incredibly light weight). And finally, before the great heating up of Earth, there is evidence to suggest that P. cubensis was extremely widespread. There seems to be a symbiosis between humans and mushrooms (much like that between humans and salvia) which has ensured the survival of the fungus through cultivation, in exchange for the psychedelic experience. What I propose (just an idea, I don’t necessarily believe this) is that DNA and the Psilocybin mushroom share common origins. If you think about the stories that shamans from around the world tell of seeing entwined serpents, entwined ladders, twin ropes and the such, telling them ancient secrets and stories of interstellar travel, it seems plausible that what they are experiencing is contact with the creators as memory stored in the ‘junk’ DNA (miles and miles of seemingly useless information), faciliteted through the psychedelic (like mushrooms). If you didn’t follow any of that, don’t worry, it means you’re sane. Further readings can be found in many books, but the Anthropologist Jeremy Narby goes into this in great detail in his book DNA: The Cosmic Serpent. Peace.
